The picture is larger than most leadership teams realise. Microsoft has assembled a complete AI platform: from the daily interface your team already uses, through the workflow tools your functional leaders can operate independently, to the governed infrastructure where complex AI agents are built and monitored.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is the daily interface. It is the AI assistant embedded across Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint. When your SharePoint and OneDrive are connected, Copilot can draft documents using your organisation's own data, summarise meeting transcripts, answer questions about internal policies and surface information that would otherwise require hours of manual searching. Most organisations have this or can access it. The opportunity most are missing is in what sits behind it.
Microsoft Foundry is the platform where organisations build, deploy and govern AI agents: automated systems that can reason, make decisions and take actions across business workflows. It contains over 11,000 AI models, including both Microsoft's own models and Claude from Anthropic. Azure is the only cloud platform where both Claude and GPT are available on the same governed platform. For a CEO, this means your organisation can build AI systems using the most capable models available, governed by a single compliance and security framework, without managing multiple vendor relationships.
Copilot Studio is where business teams build their own AI agents. Operations, finance, HR, commercial: each function can design and deploy AI workflows tailored to their specific processes. It connects to over 1,400 business systems. It requires minimal technical skill. The business significance is direct: your functional leaders can build AI workflows for their teams today, without waiting for IT to resource and prioritise the work.
Power Automate is the workflow automation layer. It connects AI decisions to real business actions. When an AI agent determines that an approval is needed, Power Automate sends it. When a process should be triggered, Power Automate executes it. This is the bridge between an AI producing an answer and the organisation acting on it.
Claude, built by Anthropic, is now available inside Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft 365 Copilot. It powers the Researcher agent in M365 Copilot for complex multi-step research tasks. It can read and reason across SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams directly, respecting the same permissions each user already holds. It is available under existing Microsoft Azure billing agreements. There is no separate contract required. No new vendor relationship to procure.
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the technical standard that allows AI tools to connect to business systems securely and reliably. Microsoft has adopted it across its entire platform. The simplest way to understand it: MCP is the universal connector that lets AI tools communicate with your business systems. It is the USB standard for AI. It means that when you connect an AI agent to a business system, the connection is standardised, secure and maintainable.
Azure is the only cloud platform where both Claude and GPT are available under a single governed environment. The business consequence: your organisation selects the best model for each task without managing multiple vendor contracts, security reviews or compliance frameworks.
The platform becomes meaningful when the components operate as a system. Consider a scenario recognisable to any senior leader.
Your Chief Commercial Officer is preparing for a quarterly board meeting. They need a briefing document that synthesises the last six months of client feedback from email correspondence, the current strategic plan stored in SharePoint, and the financial performance summary held in OneDrive. Previously, this required a junior team member spending two days pulling data from three systems, cross-referencing it, and drafting a summary that the CCO would then rewrite.
With the Microsoft AI platform working as a connected system, the process looks fundamentally different.

Copilot Studio and Power Automate represent something that most CEOs have been waiting for: the capability for functional leaders to build and own AI workflows for their teams without depending on IT to design, resource and deliver each one.
Copilot Studio is a visual builder. It connects to over 1,400 business systems. It requires operational knowledge, the understanding of how a process actually works, rather than technical skill. This means the people closest to the work are the ones designing the AI workflows. The implications for speed and relevance are significant.

The pattern across all five is the same. The functional leader defines the workflow. The AI handles the repetitive reasoning and data synthesis. A human checkpoint governs every consequential decision. Power Automate executes the approved action. Azure enterprise security governs the entire platform. Every AI agent, every workflow, every data interaction runs within the same security infrastructure that governs your existing Microsoft environment. This is the same compliance framework your organisation already operates under.
Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) manages identity and permissions. When an AI agent accesses a document, it does so under the identity and permission set of the person who initiated the request. If that person cannot access a file, the AI cannot access it either. Permissions are enforced at the platform level.
The Foundry Control Plane provides full observability. In plain language: you can see everything every AI agent does, who triggered it, what data it accessed and what it produced. This is the audit trail your compliance team needs and your board should expect.
Data residency is controlled by your Azure tenant configuration. Data stays within your organisation's Microsoft environment. When Claude is used under Azure billing, Anthropic's enterprise data commitments apply, including zero data retention options. Your organisation's data is used to serve your organisation. It does not train external models.

An organisation with AI tools has licensed software and made it available to individuals. Some of those individuals are producing impressive results. Those results live with the individuals who produced them. When those individuals leave, the results leave with them.
